Word Study-Spelling Instruction

For Spelling instruction of my Struggling Learners and Gifted Learners, I pre-test students with 25 words from the Words Their Way book and then group them according to what spelling patterns they need to learn.  This is a differentiated program and is designed for you to have a few groups each week.   We write down our Spelling words on Monday, complete a sort on Tuesday, and for homework we use Monthly Speller’s Choice menus to practice those same patterned words each night.  Thanks to Christina Bainbridge-the Speller’s Choice Menus are free and oh soo fun for the kids!!  See below for a sample and click on the link to get them all:

The students work with the same patterned words all week.  The next week we will rearrange students into different groups.  I usually have about 4 or 5 different spelling groups each week.  It sounds like a lot of work, but all of the materials are made and ready to go.

PPT Sorts for Smart Board

Thanks to Education Extras for providing us with Power Points that go along with the Letter Name Alpha, Within Word Pattern, Syllables and Affixes, and most Derivational Power Points word sorts!!  These are helpful to use with Struggling Learners and with Gifted Students too!!  She also includes the template that she used to make them in case you want to make one of your own.
